Memory Forgotten is a photographic project made in Picinisco, a mountain village in southern Italy where my family originate. The work unfolds within a landscape shaped by repetition: seasons, labour and weather. Here, life is organised around gestures that are learned early and repeated, carried from one generation to the next. The photographs centre on local sheep herders and villagers, men whose bodies move in close continuity with the land. Their actions are simple and precise, shaped by necessity rather than expression. Speech is scarce and meaning resides in posture, rhythm, in the weight of bodies against wind, stone and animals. In this space, closeness is not expressed but endured, carried forward through silence and by being present. ----------------------- Giuseppe Sannino is a photographer based in Genoa, Italy. women who feel compelled to wear uncomfortable shoes and oversized jackets in order to be accepted, while constantly worrying about making that effort too visible. Because she is a woman, she will often find herself expected to perform a role, or rather, to perform as a man, depending on the situation. A woman who is "too" feminine is often deemed inappropriate. She is not considered professional. As a result, workplaces become environments that slowly wear people down, deepening feelings of loneliness and inadequacy. Yet women possess the remarkable ability to give voice to their emotions. For this reason, even when isolated in the workplace, a woman will seek connection with another woman. Through dialogue comes awareness, and from awareness emerges the determination to gradually shape one's own destiny, beginning with the environment that surrounds her. This project, therefore, is not about defeat but about resilience: the resilience of those who occupy a space that was never designed for them and who, even in silence, continue to exist, like embers that keep burning beneath the ashes. Today we have lost a person who will surely remain forever within the field of photography, and whose images will span generations, be studied, and continue to inspire many others, living on in the memories of photography enthusiasts and beyond. Through two female bodies, the work does not represent distinct individuals, but different manifestations of the same identity, which is built through what it wears, what it shows and the way it chooses to appear. Identity is therefore understood not as an essence, but as a process.The images develop a reflection on identity as something unstable and contradictory.Objects, clothing, and attitudes become tools through which the body defines itself, but also elements that call its authenticity into question.The presence of artificial and constructed elements suggests an assembled identity, while the portrait introduces a more intimate dimension, however marked by imperfections and traces. Finally, the punk aesthetic represents a form of assertion and rupture: a declared, performed identity that rejects the idea of being coherent or linear.The project thus moves between construction and fractured homelandThere is a kind of sorrow that resists articulation, a grief so intimate, it slips through language and settles instead in images. Blue Valentines, a haunting set of photographic postcards, dares to give this grief a shape. Created using the cyanotype process, the series takes on the unmistakable melancholy of deep Prussian blue, a hue historically associated with memory, longing and loss. Drawing its name from the Tom Waits song, Blue Valentines mourns not a singular heartbreak but a layered, collective one: the rupture between a person and their homeland, the estrangement from one’s native city, the fracture of a way of life that now feels distant and irretrievable. For many Russian émigrés, those who opposed the war and left in the wake of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, this project becomes a mirror to their own exile, a visual elegy to the life they once knew. At the heart of Blue Valentines lies a poignant duality. The cyanotypes capture idyllic glimpses of Moscow, tree-lined streets, golden-hour skylines, but interspersed among them are quieter, more disquieting scenes: a shuttered bar named Svododa (“Freedom”) under reconstruction, women standing alone with unreadable expressions, flocks of pigeons in chaotic flight, police barricades that suggest both control and collapse, and the slow, ominous curl of smoke from an unseen fire. These juxtapositions underscore a deeper tension: the simultaneous beauty and brutality of memory. The emotional texture of Blue Valentines is neither didactic nor overtly political, yet it is deeply informed by the politics of the personal. Each image feels like a quiet act of resistance, a refusal to forget or normalize. The cyanotype medium, with its tactile, hand-crafted quality, emphasizes this intimacy. Unlike digital photographs, these prints require care and time, the sun itself becoming a collaborator in the image-making process. The result is work that feels at once ghostly and enduring, soft yet unflinching. What makes Blue Valentines particularly poignant is its format: postcards. These are meant to be mailed, to travel. Each one carries the potential for connection across distance, for small acts of remembrance and solidarity. In a time of fractured relationships and scattered communities, the project reclaims the postcard as a vessel of tenderness, a fragment of shared experience sent across borders, across time zones, across emotional and political divides. More than anything, Blue Valentines creates space. A space to grieve, to remember, to reconnect. A space where the pain of exile becomes legible, where those who’ve left, and those who’ve stayed, can find one another again, if only through the slow arrival of a blue-hued image in the mail. In the end, this project is a kind of photographic blues: a soulful lament rendered in cyan. A postcard elegy for a home that no longer exists as it once did. transformation. From 7 July to 5 October 2025, the 56th edition of Les Rencontres d’Arles returns under the evocative theme “Disobedient Images”, inspired by the ideas of Édouard Glissant. The festival presents 46 exhibitions, featuring approximately 160 artists across 26 historic and innovative venues in Arles, including Romanesque chapels, former factories and public spaces. Exhibitions explore photography as a tool for resistance, addressing nationalism, ecological crisis, identity politics, Indigenous voices, queerness and the rewriting of archives. The 2025 edition shines a light on Brazil and Australia, with major group exhibitions: “Ancestral Futures” showcases Afro‑Brazilian, Indigenous, and LGBTQ+ perspectives, including rescued archives from Belo Horizonte’s Foto Cine Clube Bandeirante and a retrospective of Claudia Andujar’s early activism-driven work&nbsp; “On Country: Photography from Australia” brings together around 20 Indigenous and non-Indigenous artists, such as Ricky Maynard, Brenda L.
