people like Martin Parr, who manage to bring all of these talents together within their work, and they do so without, apparently, any effort at all. Every image by Mr. Martin Parr is a story that does not seek to analyze or judge, but simply to show what is in front of our eyes, what society creates and destroys, and to tell it in an irreverent, direct and powerful way, just as has always been his way of taking photographs. Today we have lost a person who will surely remain forever within the field of photography, and whose images will span generations, be studied, and continue to inspire many others, living on in the memories of photography enthusiasts and beyond. Reality is in front of us, but very few people truly know how to see what lies behind the curtain and even fewer know how to explain it to others through an image. fractured homelandThere is a kind of sorrow that resists articulation, a grief so intimate, it slips through language and settles instead in images. Blue Valentines, a haunting set of photographic postcards, dares to give this grief a shape. Created using the cyanotype process, the series takes on the unmistakable melancholy of deep Prussian blue, a hue historically associated with memory, longing and loss. Drawing its name from the Tom Waits song, Blue Valentines mourns not a singular heartbreak but a layered, collective one: the rupture between a person and their homeland, the estrangement from one’s native city, the fracture of a way of life that now feels distant and irretrievable. For many Russian émigrés, those who opposed the war and left in the wake of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, this project becomes a mirror to their own exile, a visual elegy to the life they once knew. At the heart of Blue Valentines lies a poignant duality. The cyanotypes capture idyllic glimpses of Moscow, tree-lined streets, golden-hour skylines, but interspersed among them are quieter, more disquieting scenes: a shuttered bar named Svododa (“Freedom”) under reconstruction, women standing alone with unreadable expressions, flocks of pigeons in chaotic flight, police barricades that suggest both control and collapse, and the slow, ominous curl of smoke from an unseen fire. These juxtapositions underscore a deeper tension: the simultaneous beauty and brutality of memory. The emotional texture of Blue Valentines is neither didactic nor overtly political, yet it is deeply informed by the politics of the personal. Each image feels like a quiet act of resistance, a refusal to forget or normalize. The cyanotype medium, with its tactile, hand-crafted quality, emphasizes this intimacy. Unlike digital photographs, these prints require care and time, the sun itself becoming a collaborator in the image-making process. The result is work that feels at once ghostly and enduring, soft yet unflinching. What makes Blue Valentines particularly poignant is its format: postcards. These are meant to be mailed, to travel. Each one carries the potential for connection across distance, for small acts of remembrance and solidarity. In a time of fractured relationships and scattered communities, the project reclaims the postcard as a vessel of tenderness, a fragment of shared experience sent across borders, across time zones, across emotional and political divides. More than anything, Blue Valentines creates space. A space to grieve, to remember, to reconnect. A space where the pain of exile becomes legible, where those who’ve left, and those who’ve stayed, can find one another again, if only through the slow arrival of a blue-hued image in the mail. In the end, this project is a kind of photographic blues: a soulful lament rendered in cyan. A postcard elegy for a home that no longer exists as it once did. From 7 July to 5 October 2025, the 56th edition of Les Rencontres d’Arles returns under the evocative theme “Disobedient Images”, inspired by the ideas of Édouard Glissant. The festival presents 46 exhibitions, featuring approximately 160 artists across 26 historic and innovative venues in Arles, including Romanesque chapels, former factories and public spaces. From July 17 to November 2, 2025, the Tuscan town of Cortona becomes the global stage for the 15th edition of Cortona On The Move, one of Europe’s most compelling photography festivals. The theme this year, “Come Together”, curated by Director Veronica Nicolardi and Artistic Director Paolo Woods in collaboration with the Kublaiklan collective, explores the space between fracture and healing, personal, political and social, using photography as a powerful lens for reconciliation. In a fragmented world shaped by war, displacement, political division&nbsp; and cultural trauma, the festival proposes an artistic inquiry into reconciliation. “Come Together” is an urgent call to imagine healing processes, both internal and collective. When flesh dissolves and the soft tissue that once expressed desire, pain and joy recedes into dust? Teeth endure. These fragments of bone-like matter outlast the body’s most vulnerable parts, preserving evidence of our existence long after breath has ceased. A History of Teeth is an exploration of this persistence, an attempt to read the silent, enduring language of enamel and dentin as both record and relic. Through macro photography and forensic observation, this work looks closely at teeth not as functional tools, but as artefacts that bear witness. Every chip, stain and fissure speaks of a life lived, appetites satisfied and stress clenched in the jaw. Teeth are biological archives, encoding a fragmented history of identity, trauma and desire. They survive where voice fails, their permanence a haunting contrast to our impermanence. But to consider teeth solely through a human lens is limiting. In A History of Teeth, Nika Sandler attempt to look beyond the anthropocentric gaze. By incorporating images of plaque bacteria and microbial colonies, she invites the viewer to consider the invisible ecosystems that inhabit and transform our mouths. These microscopic lives, unseen yet omnipresent, shape us from within, carving their own histories onto the surfaces we imagine as ours alone. Technology, too, becomes a tool for re-seeing. Through experiments with machine vision, Nika explores how artificial systems interpret and abstract what we consider intimately human. The machine’s eye distorts, reorders and reveals. In these images, teeth become unmoored from their biological origins, transformed into strange topographies, at once familiar and alien. A History of Teeth is not merely about what is seen, but how we see. It asks: what can teeth tell us about ourselves, about the bodies we inhabit and the systems, organic and synthetic, that shape our understanding of them? For those shaped by fear of rejection, these technologies promise connection while reducing relationships to mutual satisfaction of needs. As sociologist Eva Illouz notes, we are living in an age of emotional capitalism. Yet despite the freedom to express and pursue desire, emotional distance and alienation persist.Ekaterina Perfilieva’s In the Daylight project explores this emotional void. Her images present familiar erotic symbols: fragmented bodies, black stockings, white fluids within sterile white spaces, devoid of sensual context. These gestures, emptied of their original meaning, collapse under the harsh, clinical light that exposes the absence of intimacy, connection, and mystery. The visual language reflects the dissociation between sexuality and tenderness, underscoring the loneliness of fantasy-driven desire.Psychoanalysis shows that sexualization often masks an inner lack — a defense against the anxiety of not being loved. The body becomes a medium for recreating early feelings of safety, yet the Other remains a projection of fantasy, avoiding the unpredictability of real emotional intimacy. Her interests lie in life across post-Soviet territories, decaying and deserted spaces and a sense of loss and displacement from home. She also engages with themes of social alienation, the loss of true intimacy in the modern relationships, and the processes of psychotherapy and psychoanalysis.Ekaterina works with mixed media, including documentary and post-documentary photography, installation, video, personal archives, and graphic design.She was born in Berezniki, Perm Region, Russia in 1988.
